ZERO TO THREE, v38 n6 p39-47 Jul 2018
On a summer afternoon in early August 2017, representatives from 20 states came to together on the campus of Saint John's University in Collegeville, MN, for 2nd Annual Alliance Reflective Supervision/ Consultation (RS/C) Symposium. The 128 participants represented a very diverse group of professionals: supervisors and staff from infant and early childhood programs, mental health practitioners and consultants in private practice, and university faculty and researchers. Originally, the symposium was created to provide individuals with experience in providing RS/C or responsibility for building RS/C capacity in their state, or both, a time and place to explore the RS/C process, deepen their knowledge and skills in offering and participating in RS/C, and connect with colleagues across the country who share a common commitment to reflective practice. RS/C has increasingly been acknowledged as an essential component of infant--family practitioners' professional development and growth in competency in the provision of relationship-focused services. It is a recommended or required practice for many professionals who work with infants, toddlers, and families in a variety of service settings, including home visiting programs, community health and mental health services, early care and education settings, and child welfare programs. There is a growing body of literature, research, and resources related to the practice of reflective supervision, as well as the acquisition of skills in providing reflective supervision within a relationship context. By engaging in reflection, practitioners are able to recognize the mental states and emotions of themselves and those they work with, leading to a greater understanding of relationship dynamics and behavior. Integrating reflection into professional practice has been associated with positive outcomes for both the practitioner and the clients. The article describes the activities of 2nd Annual Alliance RS/C Symposium (real-time reflective supervisions, small facilitated discussion groups, and symposium presentations) and the experiences and lessons learned by the participants.
