Different Aspects of Secondary School Students' Mental Frameworks Related to Concept of Scientist
Karaçam, Sedat
Journal of Science and Mathematics Education in Southeast Asia, v38 n1 p32-59 2015
The aim of this study is to examine secondary school students' images and conceptualisations about scientists by contextual data analysis, and to determine relationships between them. The respondents were 356 students attending 6th and 7th grades of secondary school in Duzce. Tests were conducted during 2013-2014 academic year. Students' images about scientist were identified via DAST. Students' conceptualisations about scientist were determined via metaphors. Metaphors were analysed at first. In second step of analysis, data obtained via DAST were classified according to students' conceptualisations and then each conceptual category was separately analysed through DAST-C. Results of analysis showed that students defined scientist as an informed/information storage, hardworking, working for society, patient and determined, intelligent and precious person in their metaphors and also they drew stereotype scientist at DAST. There were some connotations between students' conceptualisations and images about scientist like scientist as hardworking person and indicator of untidy hair, scientist as a productive person and indicator of symbols of technology, scientist as an intelligent person and indicators relevant captions, scientist as an informed/information storage person and indicator of symbols of knowledge. So it might be claimed that students' conceptualisations should be considered in later studies related to examine students' images about scientist.
