Case Study: Skinny Genes? An Interdisciplinary Look at a Complex Behavioral Disorder

Anorexia nervosa is a complex behavioral disorder with the highest risk of death of any psychological disorder. Between 15% and 20% of those suffering from anorexia die from complications that are attributed either directly or indirectly to self-starvation. Heritability for anorexia is around 0.5, meaning about 50% of the risk for anorexia is attributable to genetics and the other 50% is attributable to environmental factors. Sufferers may be as young as 5 years old and as old as 80. Some with anorexia recover completely and some struggle with it for a lifetime. Average recovery time is between 3 and 7 years. This directed case study uses a progressive disclosure model to expose students to the multiple facets of anorexia. The case follows Megi, a teenage girl who has recovered from anorexia. The case has been taught in advanced general psychology and genetics classes. It could be readily adapted for general biology, abnormal psychology, counseling, or nutrition. It is helpful for students to have prior knowledge about the theme of nature-nurture as well as familiarity with the basic concepts of scientific thinking including hypothesis formulation and the determination of cause and effect.
