Technology and Engineering Teacher, v77 n3 p20-25 Nov 2017
UNITE is a program sponsored by the Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP, 2015). The STEM Enrichment Activities of AEOP are designed to spark student interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, especially among the underserved and those in earlier grades and educators by providing exciting, engaging, interactive, hands-on STEM experiences (USAEOP). UNITE is coordinated by the Technology Student Association (TSA), and it provides a precollegiate summer program for talented high school students. TSA is a national, nonprofit organization of middle and high school students who have a strong interest in STEM. Several K-12 initiatives include unique experiences like UNITE, STEM competitions, and high school internships that aim to inspire interest in STEM careers and encourage participants to pursue STEM fields in college. This article details the 3D Rover design project, a competitive event scheduled during the last week of the UNITE summer program. The project provided the opportunity for the program students to synthesize many of the summer program's activities and experiences in assembling and programming the 3D Rover. Making the workshop a real integration of the theory and hands on activities, a competitive activity was an important part of the last day of the workshop. The objective of the Rover Workshop was to provide hands-on experiences in assembling and programming a mobile robot to encourage interest in STEM-related studies for selected 9th-12th grade students in the UNITE summer program.
