In this commentary on "A Quality of Giftedness," ("Gifted and Talented International," v27 n2 p13-71 2012), by Dr. Joan Freeman, Michael F. Shaughnessy and Gilbert Valdez recognize that those working with gifted populations have all encountered an intangible, ephemeral aspect that is often quite difficult to describe, harder still to quantify, and even more difficult to reproduce in the normal population. Whatever you call it, it seems to be that "something" that many scholars and researchers have written about, but few have investigated in any depth. This is one of those perennial questions as to whether genius is hard-won mastery or something of an innate genetic gift. Shaughnessy and Valdez hope the article by Dr. Freeman will motivate others to pursue their own in depth exploration and investigation of this "quality of giftedness" that seems so imperative a factor in the full realization of one's total potential.
