In this article, the author examines the growth of the current strain of fundamentalism that is influencing rural schools in the United States, and how it is, according to him, creating a self-sustaining pipeline of fundamentalists into positions of power. The author details the type of anti-public and anti-democratic education being expressed through fundamentalism in an analysis of three of the largest Christian homeschool providers, specifically examining the ways they parallel with neoliberal privatization. The article concludes with a brief discussion of how critical pedagogy can overcome the dual forces of fundamentalism and neoliberalism and play a significant role in the struggle to transform schools into sites of resistance against anti-public education where, says Cervone, democracy can be reclaimed and strengthened.
