Mary L. Rasmussen is a sociologist of education with expertise in studies of gender and sexuality. This angle of scrutiny (Harwood 2006) is her point of departure in conversations about schooling and religion. From this angle, Rasmussen believes that schooling and religion can be incredibly powerful in creating community. She is also clear that schooling and religion can be corrosive in relation to the development of community. Being clear that both these things are possible is an important tension to sustain in conversations about religion and schooling. This paper is a response to Julian Stern's paper, "Critical Exchange: Religion and Schooling in Conversation," which underscores the peculiarities of schooling, peculiarities which underscore the religious character of "all" schooling: public and private, secular and religious. He also reminds us that schools cannot exclude central issues of identity. This paper considers Stern's discussion of distinctions between teaching into, about, and from religion.
