In the 21st century, women and leadership have been a global topical issue, especially with countries trying to interpret and implement the millennium development goals, and with increased awareness of human rights. In Africa, political leadership among women has had its own challenges that range from social, cultural and even economic factors. In Kenya, the advent of a new constitution emphasizes equity and women's representation in decision-making. However, it is still conspicuous from the experience of the March 2013 elections, that women's voice struggled coming through the process. The purpose of this study was to identify factors that significantly affect women's access and success in political leadership in Kenya. A descriptive survey was used in the research design, using questionnaires as means of data collection. The total sample of respondents participating in this study was 396; composed of 84 county ward women representatives, 67 women elected to parliament, and 47 women elected as county representatives. In addition, a random selection of similar number of elected males (198) was also included in the total sample. The sampling technique adopted was both random and purposive. Purposive sampling was used because the study targeted women representatives, and random because the respondents also included any man who vied for election. The study results showed that social, economic, cultural and technological factors (in this order) significantly affect access and success of women in political leadership in Kenya.
