When truly spectacular events occur in the performing arts or in team sports, when the sets of artists or athletes respectively creating these events are discussed, a common phrase used in America to explain the "good fortune" that was involved in such unique occurrences is that "the stars aligned." In this commentary on: "An Interpretation of Part of Gilbert Gottlieb's Legacy: Developmental Systems Theory Contra Developmental Behavior Genetics" published in the same issue of this journal, the authors write that they believe this phrase is an apt one to use in characterizing the historically singular contribution to developmental theory and methodology derived from the alignment between Gottlieb's model of the relational developmental system and Molenaar's methods for assessing the idiographic features of intraindividual change. They agree that the scholarly history that Molenaar (2015) recounts indicates that, when independent, top-tier scholars come together in a positive way, especially when their positions were initially conflicting, the outcome may be a relatively unique and remarkable contribution to science. The authors close by saying that the scholarly path, illuminated by the links between the scholarship of Gottlieb and Molenaar, provides developmental science with the concepts and empirical tools to describe, explain, and optimize the diversity of individual ontogeny, as it actually happens in the complex ecology of human development.
