Instructional Design Changes in an Undergraduate A&P Course to Facilitate Student Engagement and Interest
Hurtt, Barbekka; Bryant, Jennifer
Journal of College Science Teaching, v46 n2 p26-31 Nov 2016
We describe changes in an undergraduate anatomy and physiology (A&P) curriculum designed to address educational goals at a private, comprehensive university. Educational goals included making course material more relevant to students' future career interests, exposing students to professionals in their careers of interest, and incorporating more writing assignments in a universitywide effort to improve writing across the curriculum. Four novel changes were implemented over the duration of the two-semester sequential A&P course: questionand- answer sessions with practicing health/science professionals, weekly laboratory discussions of media health/science articles, and two writing assignments. The two writing assignments centered around (a) interviewing a practicing professional who uses some aspect of A&P in their professional career and (b) evaluating a media article and an original research paper addressing an aspect of A&P of interest to each student. Overall, students found positive value related to their interests and career relevance in all four curricular changes.
