Generational Mentorship: How to Be a Mentor
Altamirano, Ismari
College and University, v91 n3 p43-44,46 2016
Ismari Altamirano has worked in higher education since 2009 and is currently the Associate Director in the registrar office. Here she describes her early mentee experience as learning by watching and listening rather than being an active participant in the relationship. Her mentor had her attend meetings where managers decided how to redistribute employee labor based on employees' expertise so the daily production was completed. This was a good lesson--that employees can unite to accomplish goals--and is one she still uses today. Now that she has moved into the role of mentor, Altamirano provides helpful pointers for mentors who need to develop positive, productive, long-term relationships with those they mentor.
