Subcultural groups sometimes wish to have their stories included in the national story as a way to emphasize their contributions to society and overcome the emergent negative attitudes of a dominant group. Movies can depict historical events in a way that shapes public attitudes, leaving a more persuasive view than a history book or a conversation with friends can. Three recent movies, "Selma," "American Sniper" and "A Most Violent Year," are attempts to rehabilitate the declining opinions of the general public about African Americans, the Army and immigrant businessmen. Individual heroes are preferred to more correct accounts of collective action in affecting audience attitudes.
