Men Learning through Life (and Men's Sheds)
Golding, Barry
Adult Learning, v26 n4 p170-172 Nov 2015
This "Futures" column shares insights about men's learning beyond work, based on several decades of research in men's learning in international community contexts. The article focuses' particularly on men who want and need to learn to re-create and broaden their identities beyond their working lives. This practice, well established in Australia (but not the United States or Canada) presents men who began to leave their "backyard sheds" for "community-based sheds" where they actively involve and informally mentor unemployed boys, younger men, and men with disabilities. The author describes the makeup of the men's sheds whose support relies heavily on the passionate, voluntary contributions from the men themselves. Although most of the men who participate in community men's sheds are older (median age 60-70 years) and beyond paid work, it works because there is no top down, right way. Regardless of any differences, men enthusiastically and voluntarily participate in these shed communities. The author concludes that, as populations' age and with a global need for men beyond work to feel valued and have their own space, men's sheds in community settings might soon also have a place for some men and gain traction in the United States.
