The Architect, the Museum, and the School: Working Together to Incorporate Architecture and Built Environment Education into the Curriculum
Chalas, Agnieszka
Teaching Artist Journal, v13 n2 p74-83 2015
This article documents an innovative project at the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) that placed teaching architects in six underprivileged elementary schools in Montreal in an effort to both improve the status of architectural education in schools and support teachers with integrating museum learning into the classroom. Throughout the article, the author makes reference to "professional arts practitioners" in an attempt to broaden the definition of what it means to be a teaching artist and to stress the relevance of the many insights gained by participating teaching architects to other professionals working at the intersection of the arts and learning--be they artists, filmmakers, or designers. As interviews with teaching architects will reveal, with appropriate support educational partnerships involving schools, museums and professional arts practitioners promise a rewarding strategy for enriching the curriculum and transforming instruction.
