This article presents a critical and comparative look at how two theatre programs help young people develop an artistic voice and sense of self as an artist. Each program begins with art. Individuals explore basic tenets of dramatic expression through foundational activities. As they play and experiment, the individuals discover their capacity for creative expression. They come to discern, through structured learning experiences, effective ways to apply theatre in visually and emotionally engaging ways. More important, however, the individuals recognize what constitutes a successful and resourceful ensemble, the beating heart of each organization's program. It is through ensemble-building work that the individual young artists foster the camaraderie necessary to take risks, experiment with potential ideas, and realize their individual artistic potential. It takes becoming a well organized ensemble in order to achieve that individuality. One director notes that "I don't think any of them will be actors." They may not become field professionals, but they will develop into more insightful artists, a trait they can apply to any experience they face.
