Before They Walk in the Door: Environmental Influences on Musical Ability in Early Childhood and Implications for Nurturing the Nurturers
Bond, Vanessa L.
Contributions to Music Education, v38 n2 p73-89 2011
Environmental factors play a role in musical development, particularly in the critical period of early childhood. Children have the capacity to learn in the first days of life, long before entering formal schooling. Music education during this period is consequently the responsibility of parents, caregivers, and early childhood teachers. These stakeholders must create a rich musical environment to ensure appropriate development and a positive connection with music. Therefore, the role of music educators in supporting these nurturers must be examined. In this review of literature, the author identified and summarized research pertaining to environmental influences on musical ability in early childhood. Implications for musical mentors include utilizing open-ended activities, a variety of musics, and enhancing adult behaviors; applications for music educators include providing professional development to early childhood educators and venues for communication to caregivers.
