Invitational Engineering--Good Counsel Then and Now
Shushok, Frank, Jr.; Farquhar-Caddell, Dakota A.; Krimowski, Frank M.
Journal of College and University Student Housing, v40 n2 p118-127 2014
In this article, Shushok, Farquhar-Caddell, and Krimowski, compare the vestiges of old residential environments as introduced in a 1981 article entitled "Invitational Engineering in the Residence Halls" by Jack Murphy and William Purkey ("The Journal of College and University Student Housing," v11 n1 p13-16 Sum 1981) (See in ERIC at EJ248256), a period that witnessed the founding of student development movements and philosophical theories that reconceptualised the purpose for working with college students. Murphy and Purkey noted that "invitational engineering" should remind housing professionals to carefully craft what is built for students inside and out. Shushok, Farquhar-Caddell, and Krimowski, argue that housing professionals are educators with responsibility for increasing students' sense of belonging, encouraging their propensity to take ownership for their engagement, and, most importantly, strengthening the probability for participation in their education. Shushok, Farquhar-Caddell, and Krimowski, provide an example of these philosophies in action at Virginia Tech University, and show how today's housing professionals continuously strive to align articulated philosophies about housing and student learning with day-to-day practice in order to facilitate learning environments that engage students most effectively.
