Integrating S, T, E, and M
Hoachlander, Gary
Educational Leadership, v72 n4 p74-78 Dec 2014-Jan 2015
In too many K-12 schools, notes Hoachlander, science, math, and technology are still taught in isolation from one another--and engineering is barely taught at all. Even when STEM content and skills are presented in an integrated fashion, they are rarely linked to the rest of the academic subjects or to real-world work in STEM fields. Hoachlander describes Linked Learning, an approach now being used extensively in California secondary schools that alleviates these problems and ignites more students' interest in STEM learning. Students in Linked Learning programs choose a career-themed pathway and do a four-year program of study focused on content and skills connected to that career; they also take the core academic courses, have work-based learning opportunities, and receive academic support. Hoachlander gives examples, from schools implementing Linked Learning, of how this approach strengthens STEM learning, integrates STEM-related concepts and skills with learning in core academic courses, and helps students see the relevance of their learning as they work on authentic problems in STEM-connected workplaces.
