In this article, Nancy Barile, an urban high school teacher, questions whether "grit" can solve all students' problems. She states that when she first began teaching 20 years ago, she realized almost immediately that, as an urban school teacher, she needed to encourage grit in her students. She told "gritty" anecdotes of success and worked to help students overcome obstacles in their lives. Barile, tried to show students that there is more than one route to success--and that there can always be a Plan B, C, D, E, F, and even G. One of the most powerful tenets of grit focuses on praising students-- not for their brilliance or smarts--but on the hard work and tenacity that led to their success. Grit is certainly a worthwhile trait to encourage in students, and new teachers should be aware of its power and potential in helping students succeed.
