Common Purpose and Different Approaches to Support College-Going in Five Southwestern Districts
Bosworth, Kris; Convertino, Christina; Hurwitz, Jason T.
American Secondary Education, v43 n1 p4-24 Fall 2014
School-wide approaches to increase college-going can potentially improve postsecondary education outcomes for all students. The ongoing process and challenges to establish such approaches are, however, little understood. Using qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews conducted with leaders at five public high schools in the Southwest, this exploratory study describes how school leaders (a) define "college-going culture" and (b) identify key approaches to promote college-going in their schools. School leaders articulated elements of a common "college-going culture" definition but they cited different approaches and resources to achieve the purpose of supporting college-going in their own schools. Research and practice implications are discussed.
