Over a quarter of British households now own at least one tablet device, an increase of 63% in the 12 months from February 2013 (Internet Advertising Bureau UK, 2014). This trend has expanded into the classroom, with more schools either providing their pupils with an individual tablet device or encouraging parents to purchase them outright or via a "rental" buy-in scheme. It is undeniable that the use of "fingertip" technology is growing, but opinions on its use are divided. Some see the use of technology as a reason for children becoming disengaged. Others see it as providing a pivotal link between a familiar environment, in which children feel safe, and unfamiliar situations, such as being in a woodland, where they can become withdrawn. By using tablets and making links between the "safe" home technology environment and (in this case) the outdoors, the quality and enjoyment of learning can be enhanced--often for free! Some apps will even save money by reducing the need for costly equipment purchases. This article provides tips on how to find the best measuring, identification, and presenting apps to use for outdoor education lessons.
