In order to meet clientele needs and strengthen family and consumer sciences (FCS) programming, University of Idaho Extension educators expanded their roles through the Horizons program--a community leadership program, funded by the Northwest Area Foundation, aimed at reducing poverty in small rural and reservation communities. This study measured the impact of Horizons on individuals' community participation, specifically running for public office. Study results indicated that the Horizons program significantly increased skills necessary to run for public office. By working outside of typical educator roles, FCS Extension educators were successful in encouraging networking between participants, fostering leadership development, and facilitating community engagement.
