First, Don't Be a Jerk: Proactively Creating a Civil and Supportive Classroom
Lightner, Robin
Journal of Faculty Development, v28 n3 p5-11 Sep 2014
Instructors may benefit from the framework for understanding student incivility. The framework considers stages of adolescent brain development and behaviors that were adaptive in the context of high school but are counter to collegiate success. Several activities presented here challenge instructors to be purposeful about classroom civility. When student misbehavior is contextualized within high school norms and information about the teenage brain, instructors can appreciate the need to model civil discussions and productive problem solving. Activities involve brainstorming adaptive responses, practicing a model for difficult conversations, and designing helpful course policies. By proactively addressing incivility, instructors can model the professionalism that they want to see in their students.
