Art and the Cosmic Connection
Cobb, Whitney H.; Aiello, Monica Petty; Macdonald, Reeves; Asplund, Shari
Science and Children, v52 n2 p30-35 Oct 2014
The interdisciplinary unit described in this article utilizes "Art and the Cosmic Connection," a free program conceived of by artists Monica and Tyler Aiello and developed by the artists, scientists, and educators through NASA's Discovery and New Frontiers Programs, to inspire learners to explore mysterious worlds in our solar system and uncover their geologic stories. Students become visual investigators as they study and interpret the unique surfaces of our rocky celestial neighbors: comets, asteroids, moons, and planets. They develop context for understanding their own planet Earth in the process. Originally developed for general audiences, "Art and the Cosmic Connection" has been pilot-tested in elementary grades 3-5, with art, science, and language arts teachers. The activity uses inexpensive materials available in any craft or art store. Students have engaged in the full activity in as little as 90 minutes; it also offers a wonderful opportunity to support concept development across disciplines in a more prolonged unit. In this article, the authors share their experiences in grades 3-5 with special focus on an interdisciplinary unit fourth graders explored.
