Calculus instruction is an important topic for high school and college teachers alike. A prime target for attention is integration, which, unfortunately, students too often treat as a rote procedure. Understanding the integral better will support students' application of their mathematical knowledge to science, technology, and engineering courses. The article describes two tasks as examples of activities to provide students sense-making opportunities, which highlight an applied approach to understanding the integral (the example uses a burst pipe), involves physical quantities, and helps deepen the concept for students. Tese two tasks can supplement the introduction of integration in a beginning calculus course. These types of integrals are likely not found in the introductory chapters of calculus textbooks, so teachers may wish to develop similar activities of their own.
