Katie Ridley, science coordinator at St. Gregory's Catholic Primary School, Liverpool, UK, states that the inspiration for "science ambassadors" came after embarking on the Primary Science Quality Mark programme at their school. Ridley realized that science was just not recognised as such by the children, they talked about scientific experiments, but not topics they had covered such as "teeth," "light and shadows," and "adaptation." To raise this awareness of science across the school, children were selected, received a clipboard, a white lab coat (complete with school logo), and the title "science ambassador." The lab coats were to be worn by the children whenever a science lesson was taking place and they were to gather evidence (a science skill!) to be able to report on science activities in the school during termly meetings. The science ambassadors had a special report card to complete, detailing the lesson and identifying learning that had taken place. The younger children took photographic records and, at the science ambassador meetings, they all discussed what learning had taken place. The science ambassadors were a great asset during science week preparation, and were consulted about the types of science that they wanted to see being done, the visitors they would like to invite, and in helping to display all of their work. Ridley concludes the article by highlighting the pride of the science ambassadors and the positive contribution to helping raising the profile of science across their school, because it is the children who made it happen.
