Freedman, Eric B.; Roberts, Scott L.
Social Studies and the Young Learner, v26 n1 p1-16 Sep-Oct 2013
Two articles are presented in this column. "Life in an Auto Factory: Simulating how Labor and Management Interact" by Eric B. Freedman describes a classroom simulation of management and labor relations in an auto factory. Classroom handouts are included. The next article, "Women of Action and County Names: Mary Musgrove County--Why Not?" by Scott L. Roberts, presents a lesson that can help students to think more broadly about history, geography, and the issue of gender discrimination. How did the name of places on state maps get there? For example, some counties in the United States are named in honor of historical figures. It also invites students to think more broadly about history, geography, and the issue of gender discrimination. Students gather evidence and then answer questions about American culture, U.S. history, and their own values and opinions.
