Sportsmanship, Gamesmanship, and the Implications for Coach Education
Stewart, C. Craig
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v27 n5 p3-7 2014
This article analyzes the responses of hundreds of future coaches from an introductory coaching course regarding the appropriateness of player and coach behaviors in various athletic scenarios. The scenarios epitomize ethical and sportsmanship behaviors across various sports and situations. The students read the situations and expressed their level of agreement with the actions. Upon completion, the students' responses were reviewed and classroom discussions were held to investigate the reasoning behind the scenarios that revealed the greatest conflict among students. The objective of the exercise was to have future coaches share their attitudes with their fellow coaching candidates and be prepared to defend them when opposed by different views. Later, large group discussions were orchestrated by the instructor to identify areas of concern related to individual coaching philosophies and contradictions. This practice was meant to build and reinforce positive ethical attitudes for some participants and to provide those with negative sportsmanship behaviors with the motivation and rationale to change. This exercise responds to the call on coach educators to do their part in the development of ethical behaviors in future coaches.
