There are many things that sociology faculty have to consider as they begin planning a student course such as: (1) why students need to understand scientific methods, by conducting research for themselves; (2) What specific learning goals and objectives will be met by students doing research, either individually or collectively?; (3) Why do students need to conduct research in this class (as opposed to others)?; and (4) What specifically do faculty want students to learn from conducting research? Faculty must also consider how to teach students about ethical research. Does the student have prior knowledge about research, and particularly, research ethics? Time will need to be devoted to teaching about why ethics are needed, what the university's discipline code of ethics is, and the rationale behind the norms. Having students conduct research can be a wonderful learning experience, meshing academic content with the messiness of actual research. Faculty, however, need to consider a host of pedagogical and policy items as they construct their course, in order to ensure the best possible learning experience for students.
