Learning the Ropes with Electricity
Carrier, Sarah; Rex, Ted
Science and Children, v50 n7 p36-39 Mar 2013
This article presents a lesson plan that uses materials such as rope, drinking water, and straws in a classroom activity to teach elementary students about electrical circuits in a "hands on/minds on" fashion. Students first experiment with bulbs, wires, and switches, then they do an activity with simulating electricity through a circuit with a rope, and finally use straws and water to simulate circuits. These activities help students learn about models and images in science and address the crosscutting of energy and matter: flows, cycles, and conservation.
