What's the Meaning of This? Rediscovering the Value of Our Efforts
Whitefield, Joe
Facilities Manager, v29 n5 p52-53 Sep-Oct 2013
There are often situations in facilities management where the daily repetition of certain tasks can seem meaningless to the employee if facilities managers are not conscientious. In this article, Joe Whitefield asks and answers the question: If your workplace morale is sagging a bit, what can be done to prop it up? To answer that question, he looks at a major cause of the problem: namely, tasks that are perceived as meaningless by the people who perform them. Demoralization undercuts the will and saps energy from people. Taken too far, it can be damaging. Whitefield warns conscientious facilities managers to be aware of the following demoralizing work environments as potential morale hot spots: (1) Repetitive work; (2) Out of sight work; and (3) Thankless work. He suggests that the antidote to a demoralizing environment might be to help employees discover the meaning, value, or purpose in the tasks they perform every day. He recommends reminding employees often that they are part of something large and important, and helping them to see their work more in terms of providing services that are in need. He closes by saying that managers should always take advantage of an opportunity to encourage employees and say "thank you." Being needed, appreciated, and respected are definite morale boosters.
