A Little Help from Their Friends: Institutions Build Armies of Alumni Advocates to Influence Legislators and Shape Public Opinion
Simonetti, Kristin
CURRENTS, v39 n4 p38-43 Apr 2013
Institutions build armies of alumni advocates to influence legislators and shape public opinion. This article describes two types of alumni advocacy: grasstops and grassroots. Grasstops advocacy engages smaller, targeted groups of alumni who have a stronger, more influential connection with legislators and other public officeholders. Grassroots advocacy casts a wider net and involves the larger alumni body. A university sends messages and action alerts to alumni that they can then distribute within their networks.
