Using Aviation to Change Math Attitudes
Wood, Jerra
Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, v18 n7 p408-415 Mar 2013
Mathematics teachers are constantly looking for real-world applications of mathematics. Aerospace education provides an incredible context for teaching and learning important STEM concepts, inspiring young people to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Teaching mathematics within the context of aerospace generates excitement and interest among students. This article describes Microsoft's Flight Simulator which presents a new STEM slant on students' knowledge of linear equations. It describes the math that pilots use and classroom applications, including reading flight instruments, data gathering and processing, and managing the simulator activity. Teacher resources and a "flying with linear equations" activity sheet are also included.
