Pick One! Conducting Preference Assessments with Students with Significant Disabilities

Research has demonstrated that people with significant intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities can indicate clear preferences through methodologically rigorous assessments. Once preferred items have been identified, they can be used to reinforce new behaviors, which can assist in the development of a meaningful learning experience. This article outlines how to conduct four different types of preference assessments that can be used to identify reinforcers for students with significant intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities. Methodological guidelines are provided for each assessment and include how to prepare for each assessment, what materials are needed, the approximate duration of each assessment, the assessment procedures, sample data sheets, and methods for analyzing the data collected.
