Is Science Lost in "The World around Us"?
Johnson, Aideen
Primary Science, n126 p8-10 Jan 2013
The Northern Ireland Primary Curriculum, formerly a highly prescribed, content-rich programme in which science was a discrete subject, was revised in 2007 and made statutory for all year groups by 2009. One of the most significant changes has been the amalgamation of science and technology with geography and history under a single area of learning known as "The World Around Us" (WAU). However, recent research conducted with teachers as part of a master's degree in education has disclosed some worrying trends. Although a small study, the findings indicate that there has been a direct impact on the "time and content" and the "methods and assessment" of science taught at key stage 2 (ages 7 to 11.) There is evidence in Northern Ireland that four years on from the initial roll out, teachers are still unsure about the structure of the WAU and the role of science within it.
