InterPlay: A Tool for Cultivating Expression in Technique Class
Carlson, Sarah
Journal of Dance Education, v13 n2 p61-63 2013
In her experience teaching modern dance at a range of institutions, the author has noticed that even as many students exhibit superior physical skill in technique class, most are lacking when it comes to expression. From large university BFA to smaller liberal arts programs, she finds that her students often fall into a land of physical imitation, where they reproduce the steps without adequate understanding of how to make those steps expressive and meaningful. For students of dance in higher education, she believes that exploring the expressive power of movement is as important as achieving physical mastery. By investigating how movement "moves" them, students become mindful of dance as a nuanced kinetic language that goes far beyond physical spectacle. In her modern technique classes, InterPlay forms have helped her students to value their own physical expression and to harness its potential even as they hone their technique. InterPlay is a system of improvisation-based exercises that nurture the integration of body, mind, and spirit. Codeveloped by Cynthia Winton-Henry and Phil Porter, InterPlay is not only for dancers, but for anyone interested in developing an increased connection to his or her embodied creativity and expression. The system is made up of two main components: "forms" or exercises that are often improvisational in nature, and "tools" or key principles that help guide the execution of the "forms."
