Safety First: Important Lessons for Children in the Home and School
Cole, Robert E.; Kourofsky, Carolyn E.
Exchange: The Early Childhood Leaders' Magazine Since 1978, n208 p75-77 Nov-Dec 2012
When caregivers and teachers of young children think about "safety," their first thought may be about the classroom environment and mandated regulations, such as having smoke alarms and conducting fire drills. But they can do so much more to protect the children in their care, and those children's families, by teaching lessons that go beyond the classroom. Those lessons are well worth teaching, because injuries are the greatest threat to the lives of children under age 6. Many of these kinds of injuries--from fire and burns, falls, poisoning, and drowning--happen most often in the home, where parents and caregivers are least worried about children's safety. Learning about safety doesn't have to be an "add-on" to any already busy schedule. Life-saving lessons can be learned from activities that support learning objectives, such as vocabulary building, word recognition, comprehension, and sequencing. Teachers can reinforce safety messages by sending them home with children throughout the year, or posting reminders in a place where they can be easily seen by families picking up or dropping off their children.
