Promoting an Authentic Picture of Your School
Dillon, Robert
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v78 n3 p21-24 Nov 2012
Images can be powerful tools for change, but without compelling images of the future of education, everyone will be forced to use the images of the past. Schools can't be built on old images: they must reflect current best practices that infuse technology, relationships, culturally responsive texts, and cooperation and collaboration with partners around the globe. School leaders must promote images of successful schools that highlight successes found in test scores but also go well beyond that narrow definition of success. School leaders must step forward with compelling visual and written stories of their schools that can persuade, motivate, and invigorate people to partner with schools to shape a new generation of scholars, leaders, citizens, and stewards. The roles of journalists and storytellers are rarely discussed in school leaders' training. Principals must develop their skills in three essential areas: seeing a story, shaping the story, and conveying the story so that what is happening in schools can be known in the bigger conversation on education. The education system will benefit from the reshaping of the current mental models. Schools will also reap the benefits of being able to work with partners that have a common understanding of the mission and work in the classroom.
