Principal Leadership, v13 n1 p36-40 Sep 2012
Across the country, education budgets are being slashed while legislatures are passing laws that mandate the inclusion of increasing numbers of educational programs in schools. The reality: schools must do more with less. School administrators, especially building-level principals, must take a serious look at spending in their schools. The question is, Where does one start? Reducing budgets and ensuring that all funds are expended to guarantee the greatest benefit begins by developing what Ramsey (2001) called a positive "fiscal attitude" in schools. Instead of making this a doom and gloom situation, principals can set a positive tone by being open and honest with their staff members about budget decisions and emphasizing that those decisions are opportunities to work together to identify what budget priorities are most important in their schools. As always, decision making should focus on improving student achievement. (Contains 1 online resource and 1 resource.)
