Examining the Intentionality of Financial Support for Latinx Students at an Emerging Hispanic Serving Institution California Community College

Most Latinx students who begin their academic journey begin at community colleges. Yet, the cost of college is a significant barrier for Latinx students in completing a degree. The purpose of this study was to explore the intentionality of financial support for Latinx student at an Emerging HSI California community college as it becomes HSI. Latinx make up the largest group in the United States and one of the nation's fastest-growing populations. The theoretical framework is used to better understand what it means to be a HSI institution beyond the federal designation and serve Latinx students utilizing the concept of servingness. The Typology of HSI Organizational Identities that is composed of four different quadrants: Latinx enrolling, Latinx enhancing, Latinx producing and Latinx serving. Data was collected from 13 participants from an Emerging HSI California community college through semi-structured interviews, focus groups and document analysis. There were six emergent themes throughout the study; (a) Connecting the Dots, (b) The Need to Break Down Silos, (c) It's Not Just About Financial Aid, (d) A Pervasive Lack of Knowledge, (e) the Campus Desire to Become an HSI, (f) A Call for Institutional Change.
