ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lamar University - Beaumont
This qualitative phenomenological study explored strategies utilized by risk management leadership to encourage positive behaviors in student organizations at a four-year mid-size higher educational institution in Texas. Through semi-structured interviews, participants described various protective behavioral strategies implemented to encourage positive behaviors among organized student groups, and the challenges organizational leaders encounter in their effort to sustain positive outcomes from these initiatives over time. Risky behaviors are a significant concern among college students; however, these behaviors are more pronounced with at-risk populations such as organized student group participants affiliated with Greek Life and athletics. The results indicated that risk management leadership found protective behavior strategies more effective when fostering open communication, implementing peer support groups, and providing educational resources. Recognizing the importance of these techniques can enhance awareness of the student code of conduct. By developing training programs based on this research, we can cultivate leaders who prioritize safety and effectively manage potential risks. Additionally, understanding the diverse needs of students in organized groups allows us to tailor strategies, ensuring that all students, including those at risk, receive adequate support.
