ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Morehead State University
This study examines the need for and proposes the establishment of the BRED FIRST Center of Transformation, specifically for first-generation college students at Kentucky State University (KSU). According to FirstGen Forward (n.d.-a), first-generation students are those whose parents do not have a college degree. In this proposal, student success is defined as graduating from college (Tinto, 2012). Most institutions do not have a definitive way to identify or categorize first-generation students. Yet, Means and Pyne (2017), suggest that most first-generation students are of low-income and minority backgrounds. Therefore, for the purpose of this capstone, the term underrepresented will be used interchangeably as it relates to first-generation college students at KSU. This is attributed to a high population that is both low-income and minority (KSU, n.d.-b). Moreover, due to its 28% graduation rate which is less than most Kentucky institutions (Council on Postsecondary Education [CPE], 2024), it is vital that KSU put collaborative mechanisms in place; thus, the establishment of the BRED FIRST Center of Transformation. It is the goal of BRED FIRST to promote student success for first-generation students at KSU for them to advance the state, nation, and world.
