Increasing Oncology Nurses' Participation at Continuing Education Programs: A Quality Improvement Project
Patricia L. Szabo
ProQuest LLC, D.N.P. Dissertation, University of Hartford
Background: Advancements in clinical research and cancer care have made continuing education necessary to keep nurses up to date on medical and technological treatments. Despite offering free, monthly continuing education on a virtual platform to oncology nurses, participation at these sessions was low. Objective: To increase nursing participation in oncology continuing education (CE) offerings at a large, academic medical center with a comprehensive cancer program. Methods: This was a quality improvement project using the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Model for Improvement. A purposeful sample of 550 oncology nurses within the organization were asked to complete a voluntary and anonymous survey to determine the barriers that prevented them from participation in CE offerings. A total of 90 participants completed the survey. Results were analyzed to choose one practice change to the current CE format to improve participation, followed by a Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle to test the change. Results: The primary barrier to nursing participation was found to be heavy workloads. Nurses reported that a recorded, on-demand option of the CE sessions would make it easier for them to participate in the monthly CE offerings. With the implementation of enduring on-demand CE recordings, mean participation rate increased from 39 in 2023 to 70 in 2024. A total of 178 viewings of the recordings occurred between June 2024 to October 2024.Discussion: On-demand recorded videos of oncology educational content proved to be a viable option for providing continuing education to nurses. Nurses gave positive feedback on the flexibility, convenience, and ease of use of the recordings. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
