School Counselors' Experiences Preparing for Current Crisis Events: A Qualitative Study
Catherine Roseberry
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
During times of crisis, individuals, families, and communities are placed in a heightened state of response focused on immediate needs. Although schools are still among the safest places for children to spend time, they are also targets for critical incidents. The role of a school counselor involves preparing for, responding to, and providing intervention after crisis events. The purpose of this study was to explore school counselors' experiences preparing for current crisis events. Various studies have emphasized the importance of crisis intervention training for school counselors. However, limited research was available regarding school counselors' experiences preparing for current crisis events. To increase the understanding of school counselors' experiences preparing for current crisis events, a generic qualitative methodology, using inductive thematic analysis, was applied. This study utilized Bandura's self-efficacy theory as the theoretical orientation. Thirteen, certified or licensed school counselors, from all regions of the United States, volunteered for the study. The following six themes emerged from the data: Theme 1: Established relationships build trust. Theme 2: Specific physical resources are vital. Theme 3: Well-formed and well-equipped crisis teams are essential. Theme 4: Balanced preparation and well-being can help school counselors stay centered. 5: There is a need for more professional development and crisis training. Theme 6: Collaboration with administration enhances confidence. Implications and recommendations are included.
