Technology in Urban Pre-Kindergarten Classrooms: Viewpoints of Directors across Alabama
LaShaunta' R. Matthews
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Samford University
Today, technology plays a crucial role in the daily lives of young children, even in their pre-kindergarten education. In an explanatory sequential mixed methods study, I addressed the following guiding question: "What are urban pre-kindergarten directors' self-reported behaviors associated with the International Society for Technology in Education Standards for Education Leaders, including their viewpoints on the developmental appropriateness, benefits, and limitations of integrating technology within their classrooms?" In phase one, 34 (89% response rate) pre-kindergarten directors who worked in urban districts took the Education Leaders Technology Survey. The first section had 45 statements on technology standard implementation with a Likert scale response scale ranging from "1" ("not at all") to "5" ("fully"). The second section had three open-ended questions dealing with technology use and the advantages and constraints of its use. Seven directors were interviewed in phase two, and transcripts underwent a qualitative analysis. Results revealed that the technology standard perceived to be most fully implemented was "Equity and Citizenship Advocate" (M = 4.17), and individuals felt the program's guidelines were often a constraint for implementing technology developmentally appropriately. From interview results, seven themes were identified: (1) technology impact, (2) technology influence, (3) stakeholder impact, (4) understanding of technology, (5) challenges, (6) regulations, and (7) instructional implications. Overall, pre-kindergarten directors saw themselves as mediators of technology integration in their early childhood programs. The study concludes by offering implications for pre-kindergarten directors and future avenues of research.
