ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
Counselor educators must possess the essential teaching competencies to provide quality education and adjust their teaching style to meet the needs of learners when providing distance instruction. Another factor to consider is that technology advances in the United States, the number of enrollments for distance counseling programs and courses continues to increase. It is unknown what relationship exists between professional development opportunities, the number of teaching experiences, counselor educators' race, counselor educators' teaching positions, and counselor educators' level of teaching competency when providing distance education. The purpose of this correlational study was to examine the relationship between professional development opportunities, the number of teaching experiences, counselor educators' race, counselor educators' teaching position, and counselor educators' teaching competency level nationwide when providing distance education. The Teaching Competencies Scale and a demographic questionnaire were utilized for the study. A linear regression test was conducted for each of the research questions, and all research questions were found to be statistically significant. It was found that positive relationships exist between the number of professional development opportunities, the number of teaching experiences, counselor educators' race, counselor educators' teaching position, and counselor educators' level of teaching competency. Finally, this study addresses future recommendations for administrators, universities, and counselor educators. Administrators and universities can use this information to prepare counselor educators better when they provide distance instruction.
