A Qualitative Phenomenological Study of Black Male Students Who Drop out of Colleges and Universities in Florida
Lunique Jerome
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, St. Thomas University
This qualitative phenomenological study examined the lived experiences of Black men, who enrolled in a college or university degree program in the state of Florida and subsequently left the program before completion to gather insights on their reasons for dropping out. Hence, this study aims to address the issue of Black males' lack of persistence in completing a college degree. To accomplish this, semi-structured interview featuring open-ended questions were conducted with a sample of five Black men in Florida, who failed to complete their college degree. A phenomenological thematic analysis based on Colaizzi's (1978) method was used to evaluate the collected data. This resulted in the emergence of three common themes: (a) financial barriers, (b) responsibilities interfering with academic demands, and (c) health-related challenges. The study's major limitations are an absence of participant's demographic data, a small sample size and a regional focus. In future, studies can investigate the differences in Black males experience across different school types (e.g., the differences between Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) or the differences between traditional, on-ground schools and schools that offer courses predominantly online).
