Teachers' Perceptions of School Safety

This qualitative research study investigates teachers' perceptions of school safety and their adherence to specific safety procedures in a small, pre-K-eighth-grade school district in a small, suburban school district in Illinois. Data were collected through anonymous open-ended surveys distributed to teachers with varying experience levels. The study explored teachers' perceptions of preparedness for active shooter incidents, reasons for not locking classroom doors, perceived safety measures, desired additional safety measures, the utility of identification badges for adults, and necessary training. Findings revealed a range of perspectives on school safety, including factors influencing compliance with safety protocols and suggestions for improving safety measures and training. This research provides valuable insights into teachers' experiences and needs related to school safety, contributing to a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities for enhancing school security.
