The Effect of Organizational Culture on Teacher Retention in Richland School District 2 in South Carolina
Nicola A. Smiling
ProQuest LLC, D.Phil. Dissertation, Columbia International University
The purpose of this research was to explore the effects of organizational culture on teacher retention in Richland County School District 2 in Columbia, South Carolina. This qualitative phenomenological research explored the participants' experiences and perceptions of the phenomenon under study. This was done by interviewing 12 participants to describe their experiences in their own words and then analyzing these descriptions. The preconceived ideas about the phenomenon were not imposed on the participants but allowed the participants to express their own experiences. Organizational culture can be a powerful tool to retain teachers. A positive and supportive culture can make teachers feel appreciated and valued, leading to a sense of satisfaction in their work and a decreased likelihood of leaving. Conversely, a hostile or unsupportive culture can make teachers feel unsupported and undervalued, leading to dissatisfaction with their work and an increased chance of quitting. It is essential for school administrators and supervisors to be aware of the impact of culture on teacher retention and to take steps to create a positive, supportive culture to retain teachers. The research findings suggest that it is important to cultivate a culture that aligns with the organization's values and goals while creating a vision for the organization. Leaders should adopt effective leadership practices that support employee development and growth while providing mentorship, coaching, and feedback to their teams to foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement. Finally, leaders who demonstrate empathy, respect, and trust will likely retain talented teachers and create a positive work culture.
