Undeniably Deniable: A Case Study of Tenure Denial, Persistence & Black Women
Harold Brown
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Tennessee State University
Despite efforts to attract Black women in the professoriate, higher education has historically excluded marginalized populations, specifically Black women. This qualitative case study investigated the problem of insufficient representation of tenured Black women in the academy at Historically White Colleges and Universities (HWCUs). Additionally, the study centered the experiences of three Black women who were denied promotion and tenure at a Historically White College or University. The theoretical frameworks employed in this study were Kimberle Crenshaws' Intersectionality and Patricia Hill Collins' Black Feminist Though (BFT). Participants in this study were interviewed individually and asked ten questions that answered two primary research questions: a) how did the tenure support system at a Historically White College or University impact the experiences of Black women faculty during the promotion and tenure process and b) how do experiences of tenure denial affect the persistence of faculty in academia at a Historically White College or University? Findings revealed five common themes shared amongst the participants. While managing and maneuvering mentorship in the academy, subjective and ambiguous promotion and tenure processes, and skepticism in expressing grievances were consistent with the challenges often endured while in pursuit of tenure, findings also revealed that participants believed that racial and gender-based bias and discrimination were also factors that led to the denial of promotion and tenure and their resolve to no longer persist in the academy.
